Lethbridge 2010 airshow

-Capt. Brian “Boozer” Bews is an active member of the RCAF (Royal Canadian Air Force), who had to eject from his CF/A18 within a few seconds before hitting the ground.

C Welcome Captain Brian, tell us about what exactly went wrong with the aircraft back there in 2010

-Capt.Brian: Sure, it was Lethbridge's air show a few days ahead, and as usually I was practicing for the big day, my wingman and I decided to do a couple low passes across the runway, but that day something went terribly wrong, I was heading the airfield first with an airspeed of 150knts and an altitude of 300 feet, everything was going as usual until the aircraft started to lose its speed, at the moment I knew what I was doing as the manoeuvre was something easy I' ve done 78 times before in other air shows, but this time was different, the maneuver consisted of flying low pointing your nose up adding little power until the aircraft starts to loose altitude or “stall” and when that happens you apply full power to the engines and fly away, this time it wasn't like so, the plane was beginning to stall and so I applied full power but only the left engine generated a bit of thrust that wasn't enough to fly away with the aircraft, and what usually is an easy task transformed into an irreco verable fall which lead the aircraft pointing to the ground, nothing else was left to do but eject, so in the last moments of struggle I've manged myself to pull the ejection handle and escape the aircraft just in time.

-Interviewer: Jesus, that might have been terrifying for you, knowing that an engine failure could end your life

-Capt.Brian: At a point it was, but at the exact moment I ejected and saw my aircraft going straight down into the runway I was more afraid of the bystander watching, as they were only a thousand feet away from the collision, luckily no one was harmed and after a few weeks I was able to fly again.

-Interviewer: That was amazing, thank you for accepting our interview, all the best.

NASA MANAGES TO DIVERT AN ASTEROID

The impact was not easy, because the rock was about 11 million kilometers from Earth. After the impact, scientists spent a week making calculations using ground telescopes to verify that they had really deflected the rock from Earth's orbit.

The first attempt of a planetary defence technology has been a success, and more studies on this camp are going on. NASA is preparing for everything that awaits our planet - as Director Bill Nelson says, "We all have a responsibility to protect our home planet. After all, it's the only one we have" - and the rest of the universe, if is necessary.

Rocks and rests that have been detached from the asteroid.  Captured by the Hubble telescope the 8th September.
